G, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, but promoted to 1st lieutenant at Martinsburg, West Virginia, March 13, 1865, mustering April 28. He honorably discharged with his company January 31, 1866.
He married Lancaster County-born Fannie Lucinda Breneisen December 12, 1876, in Landisville, Lancaster County, and fathered John Howard (b. 06/02/79), Emma Blanche (b. 04/19/82), Willard Goodman (b. 12/21/87), Martin Luther (b. 02/24/92), and Alice Ruth (b. 08/12/96). By 1887, he was living in Nebraska, moved to Illinois by 1892, but settled in Springfield, Ohio, where he lived out his life.
