Elizabeth "Liz" Wallhausen Anderson

ELIZABETH GAIL (LIZ) ANDERSON, 67, a resident of East Prairie, died Wednesday, September 9, 2009 in Charleston. She was editor and co-owner with her husband of The Enterprise-Courier in Charleston and the East Prairie Eagle Newspapers. She was born October 9, 1941, in Poplar Bluff, daughter of the late Arthur Louis and Mildred Carolyn (Savell) Wallhausen. She was granddaughter of August and Lena Wallhausen of Sweet Springs and James Meroe and Frances (Bronson) Savell of East Prairie. She graduated from the Eugene Field School and Charleston High School, where she was valedictorian of the Class of 1959. She received the Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she served as president of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority chapter. On October 15, 1966 she was married to James (Jim) G. Anderson in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they both worked as reporters on the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Jim and Liz lived in the Sacramento, California, area from 1968 to 1979, where Jim had accepted a position on the Sacramento Bee. Once both children, Eric Christian and Kellie Blair, were in school, Liz returned to her love of the newspaper business. She worked concurrent jobs as part-time reporter for the bi-weekly Placerville, California, newspaper and the Sacramento Bee. In 1979 she and Jim were asked, and accepted an offer to move back to worked at the Charleston Enterprise-Courier, while Jim ran the Eagle. In 1984, she and her husband purchased the two newspapers and she has edited the Enterprise-Courier since that time. She soon resumed several of the long fought battles started by her father. One was with the Corps of Engineers regarding the possible use of explosives to breach the Mississippi River levee during times of extreme flooding. She tried for years to persuade the Corps that use of the Floodway would not have the desired effect of significantly lowering the river crest at Cairo, but would flood thousands of acres of long-established farmland in Mississippi County, destroy hundreds of homes and farm buildings, and force people who live in the Floodway to run for their lives, as happened in the 1937 flood. Another special interest over 25 years as an editor in Mississippi County was promoting efforts to complete the St. John's Bayou - New Madrid Floodway project that would prevent annual flooding of the south end of the County. She also was active in virtually every effort to bring industry to Mississippi County. She and Betty Hearnes worked hand and hand in getting the state prison built in Charleston. She served on many community committees and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Mississippi County Port Authority and worked hard to restore services of the Dorena-Hickman Ferry. She was honored for her conservation efforts by state and county awards. The East Prairie Eagle was awarded Best Special Section by the Missouri Press Association for her and her husband's work on a special section about the tornado that went through East Prairie in 1984.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and a son, Eric Christian Anderson.
She is survived by her husband, James G. Anderson; a daughter, Kellie (Damon) Bone of East Prairie; a brother, Art (Helen) Wallhausen of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren, Joshua Shane and Dalton James Golighty, Mary Elizabeth Irene Bone and Damon Lee Bone III; three step-grandchildren, Mike Berry of Cairo, IL; Michelle Magee of Villa Ridge, IL; and Kayla Bone of Cape Girardeau; three nephews, Tre (Amy) Wallhausen of Cape Girardeau, MO; Matt (Laura) Wallhausen of Jackson, MO; Bill (Irma) Miller of Altadena, CA; three nieces, Jodie (Gary) Atkinson of Santa Clarita, CA; Krista (Alex) Hardin of Semi Valley, CA; and Heather (Rick) Peterson of LaCrescenta, CA.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm Sunday, September 13, 2009, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where Memorial services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. with Betty Hearnes of Charleston and Lester Goodin of Cape Girardeau officiating.
