The birth order as listed by John Barrow's brother, Reverend David Barrow, puts Jonathan seventh in the birth order, born in 1792, but on page 646 of "Ancestors," Richard Oyler reports that "John and Elizabeth's first two children, Elizabeth and David, were born in Surry County, North Carolina in 1783 and 1784. They migrated from Surry County briefly to Kentucky by about 1785, when their third child, Jonathan was born." The year 1785 is more likely than the year 1792, if the marriage date for Jonathan, August 6, 1805, is correct. It is very unlikely that he married at the age of thirteen years.

Found all in good health. We had an affectionate meeting and the consideration of preserving us all since the time we had seen one another last, which had been a number of years, raised I hope some gratitude in me to our Heavenly Parent, who had been so kind to us. (traveled) 10 miles. (Note: my brother, John has 10 children to wit: Elizabeth, David, Polly, Amey, James, William, John, Nancy, Harmon and Peter who was born while I was out.)"

He remained in that locale until the 10th, when he returned to his brothers' house. The report continues, on page 27:
"Friday morning, the weather still fair but growing very hot. After breakfast, put off to my brother's. About 12 o'clock I reached my brothers' fatigued and much exhausted with heat. I found all in health thank God. 10 Miles.

"12th. Sunday. This day I held a meeting at my brother's. By 12 o'clock there gathered a congregation of about 150. I endeavored to hold forth from James I:27.
13th. Monday morning. Extremely ill with colic...At length made use of a tea made of butterfly root. About 12 o'clock found relief. I had last week, appointed five days (of) meetings on the north side of the Kentucky (river) and was to set off this afternoon. After getting relief from my pain, I prepared to set out on my journey. This evening rode to Elder James Dupy's in company with my brother, William. Arrived there about 9 o'clock in the evening. 12 miles.
David made the circuit, preaching at various places on the north side of the Kentucky over the next few days. On July 23rd, he returned again to his brothers' place in Mercer County. Here he remained until the 25th. His account of his last day with his brothers is given on page 30 of his diary:
25th Saturday. Cloudy and very hot after Divine worship, and after an exhortation to my brother's children, and other necessary preparations, I took my final leave of his family. John had moved his family to Somerset, Pulaski County, Kentucky by 1810, when he appeared in the census. John's family consisted of 2 males under 10; 1 male between 10-16; 3 males 16-26; 1 male over 45; 5 females under 10; 2 females 10-16; 2 females 16-26; 1 female over 45.
His Barrow neighbors were his brothers, William Aaron and David. And an "Elizabeth Barrow". (sister in law?--my speculation--SP)
John and his children moved their families from Kentucky to Illinois after 1810 and before his death on 25 September 1818. Most of his descendants were clustered in and around Greene and Jackson Counties in Illinois.

I had last week, appointed five days (of) meetings on the north side of the Kentucky (river) and was to set off this afternoon. After getting relief from my pain, I prepared to set out on my journey. This evening rode to Elder James Dupy's in company with my brother, William. Arrived there about 9 o'clock in the evening. 12 miles.
David made the circuit, preaching at various places on the north side of the Kentucky over the next few days. On July 23rd, he returned again to his brothers' place in Mercer County. Here he remained until the 25th. His account of his last day with his brothers is given on page 30 of his diary:
25th Saturday. Cloudy and very hot after Divine worship, and after an exhortation to my brother's children, and other necessary preparations, I took my final leave of his family. Both my brothers rode with me to Captain Lewis' from whence I was to start to the old settlement. We had much conversation by the way. We got there about sunset. 25 miles."
The Barrow Family report found in the Brunswick County, Virginia courthouse reports that John Barrow was living at Belew Creek in Surry County, North Carolina when his first child was born in 1784.
John had moved his family to Somerset, Pulaski County, Kentucky by 1810, when he appeared in the census. John's family consisted of 2 males under 10; 1 male between 10-16; 3 males 16-26; 1 male over 45; 5 females under 10; 2 females 10-16; 2 females 16-26; 1 female over 45.
His Barrow neighbors were his brothers, William Aaron and David. And an "Elizabeth Barrow". (sister in law?--my speculation--SP)
John and his children moved their families from Kentucky to Illinois after 1810 and before his death on 25 September 1818. Most of his descendants were clustered in and around Greene and Jackson Counties in Illinois.
His children are listed on Ancestry's One World Tree. All children were by his first wife, Elizabeth Holiday:

John Barrow died in September 25, 1818 (some sources state simply 1817), in Pulaski County, Kentucky.
1. Elizabeth Barrow, born January 15, 1783, died March 3, 1835, in White Hall, Green County, Illinois. She married Joshua Jones on January 15,1802, in Pulaski County, Kentucky. They had five children: Nancy Jones, Mary Jones, Jane Jones, Miriam Jones, and David B. Jones.
2. David Barrow, born in 1784, in Surry County, North Carolina; died July 19, 1859, in Green County, Illinois. He married Elizabeth Cook on January 17, 1805, in Pulaski County, Kentucky, and they had ten children: Aaron Barrow, Cinthy Barrow, Willis Barrow, Amy Barrow, Nancy Barrow, Elizabeth Barrow, Lucy Barrow, David Barrow Jr., Olive Barrow, and Mary Barrow.
3. Polly (Mary) Barrow, born in 1786, in North Carolina; She married William Parke.

Elizabeth Holiday died in Mercer County, Kentucky, in June, 1795, after which John Barrow married Nancy Read, and they had one child:

John Barrow died on September 25, 1818.

There seems to be a question as to where Jonathan fits into the birth order. The birth order as listed by John Barrow's brother, Reverend David Barrow, puts Jonathan seventh in the birth order, born in 1792, but on page 646 of "Ancestors," Richard Oyler reports that "John and Elizabeth's first two children, Elizabeth and David, were born in Surry County, North Carolina in 1783 and 1784. They migrated from Surry County briefly to Kentucky by about 1785, when their third child, Jonathan was born." The year 1785 is more likely than the year 1792, if the marriage date for Jonathan, August 6, 1805, is correct. It is very unlikely that he married at the age of thirteen years.
THE FOLLOWING TEXT IS TAKEN FROM THE BARROW FAMILY HISTORY COMPILED BY SANDRA PASER:
On page 646 of "Ancestors," Richard Oyler reports that
"John married Elizabeth Holliday in 1780 in Brunswick County, Virginia. He was also reportedly married to Nancy Read. There is some question about which woman he married--or if he was married to both. It has been suggested that he married a second time, as a widower, since he had a very large family. Mrs. Elvera B. Belden, Barrow researcher, reports twenty-two children." (Note: He did marry twice--Any children by second marriage not known__SP)
John and Elizabeth's first two children, Elizabeth and David, were born in Surry County, North Carolina in 1783 and 1784.
They migrated from Surry County briefly to Kentucky by about 1785, when their third child, Jonathan was born. This seems to have been a brief visit, for they had returned to North Carolina by 1786, at the birth of Amey Lee Barrow, their fourth child. Here they remained at least until about 1790. I don't have places of birth for the children born 1791-1794. Their tenth child, Peter, was born in Mercer County, Kentucky.
Elizabeth must have been an amazing woman to live on the frontier with so many children and having to grow food, and make her own fabrics and clothing for her large family--how she had the energy to make it through the day is incomprehensible.
According to World Family Tree on Ancestry.com, John and Elizabeth had 10 children. Their tenth child, a son named Peter, was born 3 June 1795. Elizabeth died at the same time, or shortly thereafter. It is reported that John quickly married again--to Nancy Read, in June 1795 in Guilford County, North Carolina.
The following entry in the "DAR Patriot Index Centennial Edition, page 170 confirms that he did have a wife named Nancy:
"John Barrow was born about 1755 in Virginia; died about 9-25-1818 in ILLINOIS. He married Nancy___. He served as a Private in North Carolina."
John was living in Mercer County, near Harrodsburg, Kentucky when he was visited by his brother, Rev. David Barrow on his journey to the Ohio Frontier. A report of this visit is found on page 11 of David's diary:
"June 3, 1795. Wednesday...I set out for my brother's whom I found lived on the south side of the Kentucky River in Mercer County. I reached there about 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Found all in good health. We had an affectionate meeting and the consideration of preserving us all since the time we had seen one another last, which had been a number of years, raised I hope some gratitude in me to our Heavenly Parent, who had been so kind to us. (traveled) 10 miles. (Note: my brother, John has 10 children to wit: Elizabeth, David, Polly, Amey, James, William, John, Nancy, Harmon and Peter who was born while I was out.)"
(Note: Elizabeth, John's wife, is reported to have died soon after Peter was born 3 June 1795. That means that she died right after her brother-in-law, David Barrow had left..--He doesn't mention this in his diary.--as he stopped there again on 6 July and 25 July--SP)--There is more research to be done about Elizabeth's death date, and the date of John's subsequent marriage to Nancy Read.--SP)
Continuing with the Diary:
David also stopped at his brother's home in Mercer County on his return journey. He arrived there on July 6, 1795. By his report on page 26 of his diary, it appears that he only spent the night, feeling by the 7th "Revived. The air had become several degrees cooler. I wished to go thither for several reasons...went to Woodford courthouse, in a promising little town newly erected called Versailles."
He remained in that locale until the 10th, when he returned to his brothers' house. The report continues, on page 27:
"Friday morning, the weather still fair but growing very hot. After breakfast, put off to my brother's. About 12 o'clock I reached my brothers' fatigued and much exhausted with heat. I found all in health thank God. 10 Miles.
"11th. Rested all day
"12th. Sunday. This day I held a meeting at my brother's. By 12 o'clock there gathered a congregation of about 150. I endeavored to hold forth from James I:27.
13th. Monday morning. Extremely ill with colic...At length made use of a tea made of butterfly root. About 12 o'clock found relief.
