Rites Held for Early Basin Settler

Harley Elmer Pope, 64, died in the Park City miners hospital Monday at 9 a.m. after a three-week illness due to chronic myocarditis.

Mr. Pope was born at Fish Haven, Idaho, June 8, 1878, a son of Robert and Mary Huff Pope. The family later moved to Vernal, Utah, where he married Rozella Campbell. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Roosevelt, among the first settlers of that community. Mr. Pope was active for many years in the LDS church and served for eight years as Justice of the Peqce of Cedar Fort.

In 1933 his wife died. Later he moved to Park City, where he married Pricilla Taylor. He had since resided here.

Survivors include his wife; six sons: De Von Pope, Park City; Mark Pope, Vernal; Everett Pope, Salt Lake City; Marion Pope, Ogden; Reed Pope and Keith Pope, both in the U. S. Navy; three daughters: Mrs. Alois Glenn and Mrs. Zelda Rogers, Ogden and Mrs. Hazel Beeler, Roosevelt; five step-children: James Taylor, Roy Taylor, Mrs. Priscilla Gibson; Mrs. Edna Carpenter and Elva Taylor, all of Park City; the following brothers and sisters: Joseph Pope, Monroe; Lawrence, Kansas; Mrs Maria Gleaves, Richfield; Mrs. Eva Johnson, Montwells; M. B. Pope, Provo; Mrs. Odell Hunting, Vernal and George Pope, Ogden and 23 grandchildren, also one son, Harold Taylor in the U. S. Navy who was here at the funeral.

Funeral services were conducted in the Park City LDS Second Ward chapel Wednesday under direction of Rulon Carpenter, bishop. Graveside services were held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Cedarview. Consoling remarks were made by James Bacon and Bishop Adams of Montwell dedicated the grave; a chorus of girls sang, "Abide With Me."
