Clark died in a fire at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky, during a surprise retirement party for his mother. He was a football coach at Jacksonville State University.
Reports from the University indicate that he lost his life while trying to rescue others from the flames. 165 people lost their lives in the fire. News accounts said Clarkie "Died a hero's death"

Son of Herman and Ona Mae Mayfield. Herman worked in the coal fields and when he retired, he and Ona Mae moved from Kentucky to Ohio. She was a teacher and taught at Black Star elementary and upon moving to Ohio, she continued teaching at Wayne Township Elementary.

Clark was the star quarterback at Black Star High School, Alva, Harlan County, Kentucky. As a sophomore at UK in 1960 he kicked a late field goal to beat LSU 3-0 and later in the year he kicked a late field goal to tie Tennesse 10-10. In 1962 with 20 seconds remaining he kicked a field goal to beat Tennessee 12-10.

Mayfield, 35, of Harlan, Ky., was a graduate of the University of Kentucky. His survivors include wife, Susie and 11-year-old son, Greg.
