Harold Searcy Jones died November 28, 1996 at the Caruthersville Nursing Center in Caruthersville, Mo.
He was born July 9, 1902 in Robertson County, Tenn. He was the son of the late Gabriel Lee Jones and Jessie Searcy Jones.
Mr. Jones attended schools n White House and Portland, Tenn. He graduated from Union University in Jackson, Tenn. with science and math majors. He also did graduate study at Missouri University at Columbia, Mo. and George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. He taught school in Caruthersville for a short time before going to Wardell, Mo. where he was the first superintendent. In 1927 he was elected Pemiscot County Superintendnt of Schools, a position he held for twenty years. He then was elected Pemiscot County Court Clerk and held tht office for twenty four years until he retired on January 1, 1971.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Caruthersville, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason of Lodge #461, The Rotary Club, and served as a director or honorary director of the First State Bank and Trust of Caruthersville for over thirty five years.
On August 8, 1936 he was married to Martha Gardiner Bennett in Little Rock, Arkansas and unto this union there were two children born. Lee Bennett Jones of Lincoln, Nebraska, (The Executive Vice President of the Nebraska University Systems) and Jane Ellen Kossman of Rochester, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Fred and Harmon Jones and two sisters, Nancy Collins and Ora Miller.
Survivors include: his wife, Martha Jones of Caruthersville, Mo.; son, Lee Bennett Jones and his wife Vera Jones of Lincoln, NB.; daughter, Jane Ellen Kossman and her husband Harold Kossman of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren, David Jones, Michael Jones, David Kossman, Mark Kossman, Jill Kossman.
Services were held December 1, 1996 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. James Pinkerton and Rev. Mike Schreiner officiating with burial in the Little Prairie Cemetery.
