SHELBY Mr. J. Hugh Mauney, 78, of 305-1 Pinkney St., died Tuesday, Nov, 5, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover.

Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Peter Marion and Ferol Hord Mauney. He retired after 27 years as owner of Mauney Auto Parts. He was a member of First Baptist Church, former Deacon Chair, President Mens Brotherhood, Sunday school teacher, Sanctuary Choir and served on many committees. He was a former member of Shelby Lions Club and Shelby Jaycees. He was also an avid golfer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nadine Gilreath Mauney; three half-sisters, Kate Mauney, Thelma Costner and Vangie Sauls; and a half-brother, Charles Mauney.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Ponder Mauney; a daughter, Jeri M. Ledford and husband, Reggie, of Shelby; two stepsons, Roddy Ledford and wife, Linda, of Greer, S.C., and Randy Ledford and wife, Margaret, of Hope Mills; three brothers, Peter Mauney and wife, Edna, of Winston-Salem, Joe Mauney and wife, Sue, of Shelby and Jim Mauney and wife, Frances, of Casar; three sisters, Helen DeLois of Brunswick, Maine, Louise Campbell and Ann Williams, both of Shelby; one grandchild, Benjamin Hugh Ledford; five stepgrandchildren, Kim Byram, Lisa Frazier, Bryan Ledford, Bradley Ledford and Bryce Ledford; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Revs. Tony Tench and Glenn Davenport officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.

Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
