On February 12, 1880,in Beloit he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Emma Ely. To this union six children were born a – Ernest Ely, Dice, Ada, Edna Lois, Otis and Glenn Waldo Colson.
Herman was appointed postmaster, July 13, 1878. In April 1882, when Mr. Colson was again appointed. He has held the office of Township Treasurer for four years, and was Clerk of the school board for the same length of time, and is Treasurer of the Limestone Agricultural Association. He is a Mason,
