Flavius Josephus (Joe) Barrow was born January 22, 1836, the son of James Barrow and Catharine David Cryder Barrow. He was a private in C Company 18th Illinois Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. He joined, in Carbondale, Illinois, with his brother Lewis from Shiloh Hill on August 15, 1862, and they fought on the Union side. Flavius was mustered out on July 8, 1865, having served three years and six months. On April 5, 1866, he married Sarah A. Wise (December 3, 1846-February 22, 1910) in Campbell Hill, and they had twelve children, all born in Jackson County, Illinois:

1. Sabray C. Barrow, born December 20, 1866. She died July 27, 1867, in Jackson County, and was buried at the Barrow Cemetery

2. Samuel D. Barrow, born June, 1868, and died sometime after 1920.

3. Letheutt Barrow, born November 8, 1869, and died August 19, 1870; buried in Barrow Family Cemetery

4. James M. Barrow, born February 16, 1871, and died July 29, 1871; buried in Barrow Family Cemetery

5. Flavius Josephus Barrow, born August, 1872, and died July 31, 1919, in Morgan County, Illinois.

6. infant son Barrow, born and died December 25, 1874; buried in Barrow Family Cemetery

7. Eugene Barrow, born October, 1875, and married Maude Keck in 1908, in Illinois. He died sometime after 1920, in Jackson County, Illinois.

8. Charles N. Barrow, born August 25, 1878, and died January 26, 1879; buried in Barrow Family Cemetery.

9. George D. Barrow, born November 10, 1879, and died January 14, 1880; buried in Barrow Family Cemetery

10. Mary A. Barrow, born June 7, 1882, and died February 9, 1883; buried in Barrow Family Cemetery

11. Stella Barrow, born and died January 15, 1884; buried in Barrow Family Cemetery

12. infant son Barrow, born and died May 3, 1886; buried in Barrow Family Cemetery

Flavius Joseph Barrow died August 22, 1920, in Campbell Hill and was buried at Calvary Cemetery in that town.

Beginning in December of 1882, under certificate #22327, Flavius received a pension of $8.00 for disease of lungs and kidneys. He was a member of the Baptist Church at Barrow School House 1867 and in 1883 became a member of the Free Baptist church of Campbell Hill. In the 1910 census, he was shown to be living with his son Eugene and daughter-in-law Maude.
