Per the 1860 Federal Census, Martha and her husband Samuel Terrell farmed in the Itawamba, MS area with four young children – Winifield, Mary, William, and Erastus Swepson (E.S.).

Samuel was conscripted during the Civil War, forced to leave his wife and children to be a soldier for the Confederate Forces. He died in Richmond, VA prior to the end of the war, cause unknown, either disease or fatal wounds. He is buried at Richmond in an unknown grave in Hollywood Cemetery, along with thousands of other casualties of the Civil War.

Per the 1880 Federal Census, Martha, a widow, age 45, and her four surviving children – Winifield, age 24, William, age 22, Mollie, age 18, and Erastus, age 16 – were living in Nolan County, Texas.

Mostly likely she died at the Midland home of her son William.
