SHELBY - Mr. Richard Greer, 80, of 501 Melody Lane, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Newport News, Va., he was a son to the late Sam T. Greer Sr. and Faye Kidd Greer. He retired as a postal carrier in Shelby and was one of the first coaches to start Little League. Mr. Greer was a Navy veteran and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, a daughter, Pam Greer Lay, and a sister, Faye McMullen, preceded him in death.
Mr. Greer is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sarah Weaver Greer of the home; two sons, Richard Greer of Raleigh and Dan Greer and wife, Rhonda, of Shelby; one daughter, Patty Greer Barrows and husband, Kenneth, of Reseda, Calif.; three sisters, Peggy Percival of Rock Hill, S.C., Anne Banta of Orlando, Fla., and Margie Ramey and husband, Bobby, of Rockingham; two brothers Sam Greer and wife, Iris, of Shelby, and Doug Greer of Myrtle Beach; four grandchildren, Jennifer Ann Greer, Patrick Yates Greer, Samantha Ann Barrows, and Andie Nichole Barrows; and former son- in-law, Kevin Lay and wife Edie.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, from 6 to 7:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, and at other times at the home.
Funeral: Monday, 2 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church, the body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial: Sunset Cemetery, with military honors
