While in recent years a resident of Oklahoma, Frank George belongs to Jewell County and he came back to his old home to die.

Frank was the sixth in a large family of Georges, who came to Jewell county, locating near Ionia in the early seventies. The son of Hiram L. and Margaret George, Frank grew to manhood in the Limestone Valley and just west of Ionia on Big Oak creek in the southeastern part of Smith county.

He was married to Lolia Barnett in 1887. To this union seven children were born, all living except Archie, who died in infancy. Of the loving children four are now residents of Jewell county: Media Whitley of Mankato, Mrs. Roy Phillips of Odessa township, Ives who is living with his sister, Mrs. Whitley, and Edgar who lives southwest of Ionia. Two boys, Clarence and Harold are living in Oklahoma. Of Frank’s nine brothers and one sister, all are dead except William George in California and Emmett George of Topeka.

After maturity and until recent years, Frank George lived on the West Branch in Odessa township, where he was actively engaged in grain and livestock farming. He was a most tireless worker, a good farmer, an indulgent father and a good neighbor. For many years Frank was a correspondent to several newspapers and magazines. There was always a vivacious humor mixed with his neighborhood news. He was a great reader, and he had a wonderful retentive memory for the things he read.

About two months ago he came to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Whitley, so he might be close to good doctors, but all the loving care and medical aid did not avail. He was taken to the Belleville hospital, where he passed away.

The funeral was held under the trees in the beautiful grove adjoining the West Branch school. Rev. L. B. Tremain, a life long friends and acquaintance, preached the sermon to a large crowd of Frank’s former neighbors and relatives.

Frank George was born 68 years ago in 1865 in Newburn, Iowa. He moved with his parents to Jewell county when a small boy and spent a great many years is this locality.

Thus passes another of our pioneers. He goes to his reward with nothing but kind memories of the active and useful life which he led.
