Mrs. Stewart was born on June 14, 1923 in Longworth, Texas the daughter of Luther Ragan and Alvena Ray Ragan. She married Elvin M. "Slim" Stewart in Sweetwater on November 9, 1940. During their marriage Slim and Jewel had lived 10 years in Snyder, 23 years in Mineral Wells and had lived in Abilene since 2003. She was a Baptist and taught Sunday school for several years. Jewel enjoyed gardening, cooking and taking care of her family. She had a special way of making everyone feel welcome in her home, no one ever left hungry or was turned away if they were in need.
Survivors include her children, Carolyn Faulkenbery and husband Jesse of Snyder, Debbie Wilson of Ada, Oklahoma, Pat Carroll and husband Bill of Abilene, Joe Stewart and wife Vanessa of Snyder, and Jeff Stewart and wife Dawn of Comanche; daughter-in-law, Roberta Stewart of Mineral Wells; two sisters, May Gibson of Abilene and Mable Dunlap of Midland; 19 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Her husband of 65 years, a daughter, Cinda Long, a son, Jerry Stewart, son-in-law, Curtis Wilson and a grandson, James Elvin Long preceded her in death.
