John Hanagan OBIT: O'Neill Sun, O'Neill, Nebraska, April 9, 1896
John Hanagan, aged 98, died last Thursday morning. He was born in 1798, in the parish of Partrae, township of Balinrobe, County Mayo, Ireland. He emigrated to the United States in 1866, locating with his family at St. Louis, where they resided until 1876, when they moved to Holt county in March of that same year, locating on a homestead three miles northwest of O'Neill, where they have resided. For the past few years the aged parents have made their home with their son Michael on an adjoining farm. Deceased leaves a wife about 97 years of age, and a son, James, living in St.Louis; also two daughters, Mrs. John O'Fallon, of Grattan township, and Mrs. John Heenan, of Shields township, this county; also twenty-one grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The funeral occurred at 1 o'clock Saturday from the Catholic church and was largely attended.

The Hannagan, Hannigan, Hanagan, Hanigan, Hanneghan name is perplexing.
I do have a Notary from October 20, 1881, that states that John Hanneghan's name was misspelled on his Homestead Application No. 3329. His name is John Hanneghan, not John Hanagan as was set forth in the final receipt. He made his mark X.
