Robert Gilbert Hyer, 85, passed away at his home on August 27, 2009 from causes incident to age. He resided at 2641 East Craig Drive (3640 South) in East Millcreek, Utah at the time of his death.

Robert was born in Lewiston, Utah on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1924 to Merle Gilbert and Verna Porter Hyer.

He grew up on the family farm and learned to do all of the farm work. He worked with sugar beets, potatoes, hay, and grain, and herded sheep.

Robert was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945 and spent time in Japan after the end of World War II. One of his proudest accomplishments was climbing Mt. Fuji in Japan.

After attending Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, he was called in September 1947 to serve an LDS mission in South Africa. He returned from his mission on the Queen Mary, docking in New York.

As he disembarked, he met Helen Workman from Salt Lake City. Upon seeing her, he heard a voice say, "There is the girl you are going to marry." They were married a year later on June 6, 1951 in the Logan LDS Temple. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage before Helen passed away in 2005.

Robert worked for many years at Murdock Travel, where he had the opportunity to experience "Familiarization Tours" and had the privilege of escorting numerous Murdock Travel Tours. This also gave him and Helen the pleasure of taking several ship cruises.

Robert had been in all 50 of the United States and over 80 countries and islands of the world. He was a member of the Travelers Protective Association of America, serving as Secretary of the Utah Division.

Robert was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in many callings over the years including Ward YM President and Stake Executive Secretary. From May 1991 to May 1992, he and Helen served a mission in the Washington, DC, Temple.

He enjoyed attending the temple and last did so just a few weeks before his passing. He joined the Mills Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers, where he served on the board and was Chapter President in 1996.

Robert is survived by his children Todd (Norma) Hyer of Draper, Jan (Russell) Cope of Sandy, Holly (Douglas) Cox of Taylorsville; grandchildren Mackenzie Hyer (Jess Schuck), Cameron (Hans) Hubrich, Andrew (Danna) Hyer, Daniel Cox, Cindi Cox, Bryan (Tamra) Cox, Caysee Cox, and Jonathan Cox; five great-grandchildren; brothers Weldon, Rey (Verla), Howard (Marilyn), and Cleve (Elaine), and sister Lucile.
