Cromwell's officer during the English Civil War. Son of Sir Francis Popham, he supported parliament and was elected M.P. for Minehead, 1644. He commanded a force in Somerset and Dorset. He was appointed a commissioner for the immediate ordering of the navy in 1648. He was buried in Westminster Abbey and after the Restoration, together with other Cromwell's supporters and family, he was reburied in St Margaret's Churchyard.
