Benjamin Leander Rockett was born on his parents' farm in the Camp Creek Community a few miles south of Spearsville. In about 1916 or early 1917, he left Union Parish Louisiana with his brother, William Stanford Rockett, and moved west to New Mexico. Ben homesteaded 640 acres of land in Guadalope County New Mexico, near the town of Riddle (now a ghost town). Riddle was located near Luna, in what is today the Gila National Forest on the western side of New Mexico near the Arizona state line.

Ben and Willie registered for the draft in June 1917, and Ben Rockett enlisted in the United States Army soon after registering. He was sent to California, where he appears to have contracted the virus responsible for millions of people in what is now called the "flu pandemic." The army shipped his body home to the Camp Creek Cemetery for burial.
