Demaris Rockett Burns, age 93, passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2016, in Ruston, La. Visitation and funeral services were held at First Baptist Church of Bernice on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Visitation began at 10:00 a.m. with funeral service following at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Len Woods officiated the service. Burial was held at the Bernice Cemetery. A reception for family members was held at the church following the burial service.
Mrs. Burns was born on February 22, 1923, and reared in Camp Creek Community near Spearsville, La. She graduated from Spearsville High School and Louisiana Tech University. She received her Master of Library Science degree at Louisiana State University. She married Edward Young Burns from Bernice, where they lived and raised their children before his death.
Mrs. Burns was a teacher and librarian at Spearsville High School for twenty years. She was a member of Friendship Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church in Bernice and was church librarian for many years before moving to Ruston. She attended Emmanuel Baptist Church while living in Ruston. She was a member of the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association and Louisiana Retired State Employees Association.
Mrs. Burns was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Edward Young Burns, her parents W.L. and Bettie Ogden Rockett, and her siblings: Benjamin, Stanford, Carlus and Hamric Rockett, brothers; Bertha Johnson, Myrtle Hill, Roena Jeter, Odessa Post, Otha Nutt, Hazel Bryant, Letha Everett and Minnie, Annie, and Jewel Rockett, sisters.
Mrs. Burns is survived by one son, Terry Young Burns and his wife, Jeanne, of Ruston; daughter, Rebecca Burns Barnett of Hermitage, Tennessee; and step-daughter, Cecile Janilu Burns Colvin and her husband, Bill Colvin, of Brentwood, Tennessee. Surviving grandchildren and their families are listed as follows: granddaughter, Brittany Burns Griep, her husband, Ryan, and children, Madalyn, David and Kinsley Griep of Ruston; grandson, Paul Young Burns, his wife, Ashley, and daughters, Jessie Elizabeth and Abigail Noel, of Memphis, Tennessee; granddaughter, Jenny Barnett Carroll, her husband John, and children, Jacob, Conner, Evan, and Callie Carroll of Kingwood, Texas; grandson, Benjamin Barnett and his son, Jonah Barnett, of Covington, Louisiana; granddaughter, Bethany Barnett Whiteside, her husband, Kevin, daughter, Nadia Salem, and son, Tyler, of Dubach, Louisiana; granddaughter, Stephanie Colvin Solis, her husband, Danny, and children, Daniel and Jacob Solis of Houston, Texas; and grandsons Jason and Scott Colvin of Brentwood, Tennessee. Other survivors include many nieces and nephews.
