PRESQUE ISLE - Gretchen Mildred Sutherland Gallant, 90, wife of the late Harold Gallant, died peacefully Aug. 30, 2009, surrounded by family. She was born Oct. 12, 1918, in Woodland, the daughter of Adelbert and Marie (Hardaker) Sutherland. She was educated in the Woodland and Caribou school systems. As a young girl, she loved getting up early to pick potatoes on the family farm in Aroostook County. For many years, she and her husband ran a boardinghouse on Aroostook Avenue, Millinocket, where they provided room and board to the mill workers.
She is survived her son, Robert Gallant of Waldoboro; grandson, Jason and his wife, Adrienne; great-granddaughter, Norah Joy, all of Hope; daughter, Marie Hruska and husband, John; her grandson, Mark and wife, Wen; and granddaughter Natalie Jean, all of Cape Cod, Mass. She is also survived by four brothers, Hayden Sutherland of Woodland, Stanley Sutherland of Hebron, Conn., Russell Sutherland of Saint Petersburg, Fla., and Willis Sutherland of Caribou; and five sisters, Marjorie Giggie of Presque Isle, Esther Page and Betty Branscom, both of Caribou, Eugenia Gardner of Portage Lake, and Judi Greenier of Cross Lake. She was predeceased by one sister, Margaret Turner. She also leaves behind three very dear friends, Geraldine McCleary, Edith Mullane and Eunice Barnett. Burial will be at East Millinocket Cemetery.
