He was deployed with the approximately 200 troops from the Republic of Estonia serving with NATO forces in Afghanistan.
The infantry squad leader was killed in action near Pimon military base, in Nad-e-Ali area of Helmand province, southern Afghanistan. His unit was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade which also injured three other soldiers.
Aged 30, he was from Kõpu, Viljandimaa, Estonia. He began his military service in 1998 and previously deployed on foreign missions in 2003 to Kosovo, in 2004 to Iraq and in 2007 to Afghanistan.
He was posthumously awarded the Order of the Cross of the Eagle (mõõkadega Kotkaristi kuldristi teenetemärk) and the Estonian Defence Forces Distinguished Service Decoration for battlefield service.
The funeral was held in the Kaarli Church, in Tallinn, on June 20, 2009. The service was attended by family, friends, military colleagues and dignitaries including President Toomas Hendrik Ilves. Burial with full military honours followed in the Kõpu Cemetery in Viljandimaa, southern Estonia.
