Louis Speis was born in June 1870, in Rochester, New York, to Jacob Speis and Catherine Reinhardt Speis. He was the youngest of their eleven children. He attended school in Rochester, and sometime around 1890, Louis moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Louis died on 26 March 1892 in Milwaukee; cause of death was Phthisis. He was buried on 30 March 1892 in Mount Hope Cemetery.
