Mr. Harold Wayne Backers, Sr., 82, of Bellview Road, Rockmart, passed away Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009. He was born on March 16, 1927, in Polk County, son of the late Odis Backers and the late Sarah Ernestine Robinson Backers. He retired from the Engineered Fabrics Corporation and was a member of the Bellview Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II and was a member of the Brown-Wright American Legion Post #12. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Iona Day and Mrs. Norma Hooper; and a brother, Mr. Bobby Backers.
Survivors included his wife, Marie Busby Backers. of Rockmart; daughter, Angela Meisner and husband Bert. of Smyrna; son, Harold Wayne Backers, Jr.. of Rockmart; two step-daughters, Annette Roskosky, of Rome, and Darlene Boatner, of Lindale; two step-sons, Eddie Terry and wife Peggy, of Buchanan, and Glenn Terry, of Armuchee; sister, Helen Kinney, of Rome; and eight grandchildren. A number of nieces and nephews and many friends also survived. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 12, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of the Freeman Harris Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Edwards officiating. Interment services followed in the family lot of New Prospect Church cemetery with Brown-Wright American Legion Post #12 in charge of military graveside rites. The following grandchildren served as pallbearers, Quinton Meisner, Kyle Ashley, Jordan Ashley, Blake Terry, Joshua Terry, Caleb Boatner and Kevin Boatner. Honorary pallbearer was Courtney Terry. Freeman Harris Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral services.
