James was one of eight children born to Dr. James King (1826-1872) and his wife, Lucy Harrison (1831-1879). All of their children grew to adulthood except for Eddie King, who died in 1879 when he was seven years old. Dr. King had an extensive medical practice in the Concrete area. The only known child born to James A. King and his wife, Christina Batchelor, was named for James' mother, Lucy.
