Robert E. Kohnhorst

Robert E. Kohnhorst, 85, lifelong resident of Wausau, died May 4, 2009, at his residence, with his family by his side.

Mr. Kohnhorst was born February 15, 1924, the son of the late Edwin Ernst and Gertrude Johanna (Reissmann) Kohnhorst. He proudly served in the 2nd Division of the U.S. Army, during World War II and earned a Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the Battle of the Bulge. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he maintained a life membership with, and was active in, the VFW Burns Post #388, Wausau. On July 20, 1946, he was united in marriage to Lois Eunice Blum.

He worked at Wausau Papermill throughout his life and was a very talented handyman, always willing to help others. Mr. Kohnhorst was a 79 year member of Christian Assembly, in Wausau.

Above all, maintaining relationships with family and friends was the most important to Robert. He enjoyed traveling with his children and wife during their annual vacations. He was an avid cowboy and western memorabilia collector, especially anything relating to "The Singing Cowboy" Gene Autry.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lois, on March 3, 1993.

Evening visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, at the Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 7, at 10:30 a.m., at Christian Assembly, Grand Avenue, Wausau. An hour of visitation will be held beginning at 9:30 a.m. the day of the service. The Reverend Dennis Romine will officiate. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, with full military honors.
