Born in Harrisburg, September 14, 1928, he was the son of the late Joseph Samuel Harlan Sr. and the late Hannah Crump Harlan. He preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Harlan Gibbs, and a brother, Boyd Harlan.
He was a graduate of John Harris High School, Class of 1946. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion Post 594. He was retired from the Harrisburg Post Office.
He was a gentle man who loved his family most of all. He and Marian were married for 53 years.
He is survived by four daughters, Virginia M. Coy, and husband, Jay of Harrisburg, Marjorie A. Rodgers, and husband, Jimmy of Moyock, NC, Shirley G. Sowden, and husband, Roger, of Mechanicsburg, and Susan E. Stewart, and husband, Benjamin of Ickesburg; six grandchildren, Dr. Benjamin L. Stewart II, and wife, Angela, of New Bloomfield, Sgt. Wade J. Stewart, and wife, Amy of North Carolina, Alex D. Stewart, Penn State University, Brad Rodgers of Missouri, Laura Conner, and husband, Matt of Missouri, and Jade Sowden of Scranton; four great grandchildren, Connor J. Stewart, Sophia A. Stewart, Benjamin L. Stewart III, and Rebecca Rodgers.
Pastor Stephen Portner will officiate at the service, to celebrate his life on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at Chambers Hill United Methodist Church, Harrisburg. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chambers Hill United Methodist Church, 6300 Chambers Hill Road, Harrisburg, PA 17111.
