The son of Benjamin & Isabella (McLaughlin) Gibler [sic], he married Mary Ann Bricker June 24, 1858, in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Valerie (b. 09/11/53 - married Peter Gayhart and William Willis Crall), Levi Lehner or Leonard, (b. 02/16/59) and Samuel Harvey (b. 09/19/61). In 1860, he was a miller living with his family in Upper Allen Township, Cumberland County.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Mechanicsburg July 23, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 16 as 2nd lieutenant of Co. F, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. He died at Bloody Lane during the battle of Antietam from a through-and-through head shot.
