At some point after 1880, her mother brought most of her children from Mississippi to Texas to start a new life. It is not known if Mattie's father lived long enough to make the move.
After settling in Van Zandt County, Texas, with her mother and siblings, Mattie became friends with her neighbor Ruben Harrison Cannon, the son of William Bird and Elvy Cannon. Ruben was six years older than Mattie. When Mattie was eight and Ruben was fourteen, her half-sister Stella M. Ballard married his brother William Robert Cannon. Then, in 1894, it was Mattie and Ruben's turn. They married on December 18, 1894, in Hunt County, Texas, when Mattie was 18 and Rubin was 24.
The couple farmed most of their married life. In 1900 their farm was very close to the farm of her half-sister Sallie Bettie Ballard Crow and Sallie's husband John P. Crow.
Mattie and Ruben had two children. Their first was a daughter who was born on October 21, 1901. Her name was Myrtle Mae Cannon. Myrtle married Virgil Franklin Brockway about 1917 and had nine children with Virgil. Mattie and Rubin had another child, a son, on October 28, 1907, on their farm near McCoy, Kaufman County, Texas. They named their child Reuben Kinare Cannon. Kinnie was not a well infant, however, and tragically died when he was only two and a half months old.
As they grew older, Mattie and Ruben moved to Dallas to live. Mattie died at the age of 84 at their home on Palmetto Street. Ruben died at the age of 94 in a nursing home in Seagoville, Texas. They were both buried near their son in Howell Cemetery, near Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas. Their graves are also not far from those of Mattie's mother Elizabeth Northcutt Ballard Livingston and her brother William Jackson Livingston and her half-brother John Walter Ballard.
