Merlin L. Bates, 82, of Connersville, died Aug. 19, 2009.

Born Sept. 26, 1926 in Rushville, he was the son of Donald and Ada Bell Matthews Bates, both deceased. He married Ruth M. Geis May 22, 1954; she preceded him in death June 10, 2005.

Mr. Bates was a graduate of Connersville High School. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army. He was employed as a lay-out inspector at Design & Manufacturing and their successor, White Consolidated, for 28 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Saint Gabriel Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #861, the Knights of Columbus Bowling League and American Legion Post #1.

Survivors include children, Tina (Larry) Davis of Connersville and Brian (Ginger) Bates of Rushville; grandchildren, Juanita Pennington, Heather Pennington and Hannah Bates; one great-grandson; and sister, Nila Lawson of Bloomington.

Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by sisters, Mildred Stader and Violet Byrd, and brother, Charles Bates.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Saint Gabriel Catholic Church in Connersville with Father Stanley J. Herber officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Connersville's Dale Cemetery. A Scriptural Service will be held at the funeral home Saturday prior to the funeral procession to the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Education Coalition's Children's Literacy Fund c/o Miller-Moster-Robbins Funeral Home in Connersville.
