A retired LSU professor of the College of Agriculture and a resident of Baton Rouge, he died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at his home. He was 98 and a native of Newark, N.J. Graveside service will be at Liberal Synagogue Cemetery on Monday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rabbi Thomas Gardner. Survived by his wife, Sylvia Levin Rusoff; daughters and son-in-law, Marsha Rusoff, and Gail and Don Roache; two granddaughters and spouses, Stephanie and Jeremy Turner and Lisa and Jule Dolci; and six great-grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His friends and family will miss his warm smile and sense of humor. Rusoff was recognized in Leaders in American Science, American Men of Science, World's Who's Who, Who's Who, Who Knows and What, Who's Who in the Southwest, Chemical Who's Who, and Who's Who in World Jewry. Honors include: Charles E. Coates Memorial Award as outstanding chemist in Baton Rouge, member of the Governor's StateWide Committee on Nuclear Energy, Borden Award for outstanding dairy nutrition research in the U.S., LSU Distinguished Achievement Award, Louisiana Association B'Nai B'rith Man of the Year, Award of Merit for Research by Gamma Sigma Delta, 1969 Honors Award by So. Division-American Dairy Science Association for contributions to the dairy industry in the South. He was author and co-author of more than 200 scientific papers and journals, including "The Miracle of Milk" with over 200,000 reprints and translations into Spanish, French, and Japanese. His pioneer research of fluoridated milk for prevention of dental caries in children attracted world-wide attention. He was also co-founder of LSU Hillel and co-director for 20 years.
