GRAY -- Carol R. Watts, 85, formerly of Portland, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at Maine Medical Center with family at her side.
She was born on May 9, 1922, in Hopedale, Mass., to Ernest L. and Carolyn M. Hilton. She graduated from Falmouth High School where she excelled in Basketball, Track, and was an award winning prize speaker.
She attended Gorham Normal School (USM Gorham) on Oct. 27, 1942. She was married to Bernard Brackett Watts, who was of Portland. He predeceased her on Aug. 11, 1981. Also predeceased are her brothers Glen Hilton and Robert Hilton.
Carol and her husband lived in Portland for over 40 years. Carol was a lead floral designer for Sawyer's Flowers Shop and later with J.W. Minotts both in Portland. Carol still found time to raise six children, attend school functions, put food on the table, and still made it up to Little Sebago Lake in Gray. When Bud passed away, she made this her final home for the past 20 years. She enjoyed hobbies such as stained glass, hooked rugs, and crossword puzzles.
Carol is known by her beloved family and many friends as Camel.
She is survived by her sister, Dorothy E. Blake of Portland; sons, David E. Watts and wife Audrey of Windham, Jerome B. Watts and wife Carol of Cumberland, daughters, Pamela J. Stanley and husband Thomas of Windsor, Vt., Vickie W. Watts of Gray, Deborah J. Gaydos and husband Tom of Thompson Falls, Mont., and Mellisa A. Lekas of Portland; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Camel will be missed by her family and all that have known her.
There will be no visitation period. A funeral will be held 12 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, Old Belgrade Rd. and Rte. 27, Augusta. Father Patenaude will officiate. Arrangements entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.
