Francis Dunond Reed
Francis Dumond Reed, mother of Dr. S. W. Reed and widow of the late Dr. S. W. Reed, died at a New York hospital on Monday. Her body was brought to Margaretville on Tuesday and the funeral held from her son's home on Wednesday at 11 o'clock.

Mrs. Reed was born in New Kingston December 8, 1817, the daughter of Kingston Dumond, and was, therefore, in the 87th year of her age. She was married to Dr. Reed in 1861 and had resided in Margaretville since that time. About three months ago she fell and broke her hip and this was the cause of her death. She suffered a similar accident some years ago and recovered.

Mrs. Reed had outlived her generation. Her days were what the present calls those of the long ago She was married during the Civil War at the age of 17. She and Dr. Reed became the leading citizens of the vicinity for a generation. She was possessed of great personal beauty and her husband was the financial and political leader of the community. He was supervisor of the township for 19 years. Her days were those of the stage coach and the building of the Ulster & Delaware, the days when the farmers of the section made butter during the season and saw the only cash of the year when they sold it in the fall. Dr. Reed made his professional calls with horse and buggy, there was no telephone, no electric lights, no other modern convenience.

There survives a son, Dr. S. W. Reed of this village, and a daughter, Mrs. W. B. Child of Mount Vernon.
