OLDEST DOCTOR DIES AFTER LONG YEARS OF SERVICE

Smith W. Reed passed quietly away Saturday evening.

TOOK CARE OF THE SICK FOR SIXTY YEARS.

He was a leader and had exerted a wide influence throughout this section.

Dr. Smith W. Reed, who has practiced medicine in Margaretvllle from 1854 to within a week from his death, died peacefully at his home here last Saturday evening at 8 o'clock at the age of 84 years, having gradually failed during the last few months as the rigors of age emaciated his rugged constitution. His last prescription was given the Sunday before his death. During the 60 years that he has administered to the ailing of this section he has won a wide reputation as a physician and a man of affairs and was long known as one of the most prominent men of the county.

Smith W. Reed was born In Roxbury June 21, 1830. He was educated In the Roxbury common schools, and in the Delaware Literary institution at Franklin. In the fall of 1850, when 20 years of age, he came to Margaretvllle, in order to study medicine with his elder brother, Aaron, and subsequently received a diploma at the Vermont Medical College in 1851. After practicing here for a year he went to Liberty but did not stay there long for he found a stronger attraction in his home field, where he was already so well and kindly known. Here he has even since remained having the largest practice In the neighborhood for many years.

In 1800 he opened a drug store, one of the most modern business places in the village and in 1867 he built the residence on Walnut street in which he lived at the time of his death.

The Doctor was first married in 1865 to Harriett A. Dumond; but, she dying at the early age of 19 the Doctor was again married, the bride being Frances A. Dumond, an aunt of his first, wife and the daughter of Cornelius and Sylvia (Wood) Dumond. Of this union have come four children; viz., Harriett Amanda Reed, who died young; Randolph R. Reed, who died in the prime of young manhood; Emma, Dumond Reed, now Mrs. W. H. Chllds and Smith W. Reed, who Is a resident of this village having come here recently to help care for his aged father.

Dr. Reed was Supervisor of Middletown for fourteen years. He has also held the office of Town Clerk, School Superintendent and was the first president of the village in 1875. In politics has always been a staunch Democrat and his advice in party affairs has always been sought on important undertakings. He was a steadfast member of the local Masonic Lodge and held the place of Master of the Lodge for several years.

The funeral was held Tuesday at the house at 2 o'clock and was largely attended. The services at the house were in charge of the Rev. C. C. Bransby and at the grave the services were conducted by the Masonic Lodge which attended in a body about 60 Masons being in line. The pall bearers were 6 local physicians.

Dr. Reed was one of the oldest physicians in this part of the State and his name has often been mentioned in medical papers in that connection.
