MR. JOHN E. PERRY
Many friends in Lucas county will learn with sorrow of the death of one of Lucas county's pioneer residents, Mr. John E. Perry, which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Tillie Payne, in Luther, Oklahoma, on March 17, 1924, at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 13 days.
The news of his death came as a great shock to his relatives and friends here, as they had not been apprised of his illness although he had been in a feeble condition for some time. He had been spending the winter in Oklahoma with his daughter.
The remains were brought to Chariton on Tuesday evening and taken to the Beardsley undertaking parlors, where funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Frank Bean, of the M. E. church, under the auspices of the Grand Army of the Republic, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Oxford cemetery.
John Ervin Perry was born in Brown county, Ill., on July 4, 1839. On July 25, 1867, he was married to Harriet E. Thomas, who passed away on December 26, 1919. To them five children were born, two having preceded him in death. Those left to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted father are: Mrs. Tillie Payne, of Luther, Okla.; B. F., of Missouri Valley, Ia.; and R. L., of near Chariton. There are also a number of grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He enlisted in the Civil War at Mt. Sterling, Ill., on May 25, 1861, and on account of poor health was discharged at Corinth, Miss., on July 8, 1862.
He united with the Methodist church a number of years ago and has lived an upright Christian life. He has won many friends during his long residence in this county who greatly deplore his demise and will extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved ones.
