Gabriel Walker Sr., 93, formerly of Tremont Street, died Friday at a local hospital. He was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., a son of William T. and Annie Pickett Walker. He attended local schools and graduated from Tyner High School. He continued his education at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, earning his bachelor's degree.
During World War II, Mr. Walker served in the Army, reaching the rank of major. He served in the China, India and Burma theater of operations. He also graduated from the U.S. Army Command Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and was awarded with the Army Commendation Medal.
After his discharge, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a postal inspector. He retired from there in 1967 after 27 years.
Mr. Walker was a Civil War buff, having had two uncles who served with the Union Army.
His wife of 68 years, Agnes Layne Walker, died in 1997.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas E. of Charlotte, N.C., Gabriel Jr. of Portland and Roy W. of Concord, N.H.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. (Maine Sunday Telegram 12/27/1998)
