CLYDE F. GOODBALLET, EX-COUNCILMAN, DIES
Heart Attack Blamed; Rites To Be Arranged Later
Clyde F. Goodballet, former street commissioner and twice a member of City Council, died suddenly of a heart attack today at 10:15 a.m. in his apartment in the basement of the Carnegie Public Library. He was 54.
Mr. Goodballet, who had been in poor health for several months because of a diabetic and heart condition, was found by his wife, Mrs. Gertrude F. Goodballet, custodian at the library, in an unconscious condition. She called a physician but he died within a few minutes after the doctor arrived.
Mr. Goodballet was born in Marietta and came to East Liverpool in 1907. He formerly was employed as a kilnman at the Homer Laughlin China Co. but later was appointed an operator at the Water Works plant, from which he retired last March 1.
A Democrat in politics, Mr. Goodballet, was elected First Ward councilman for the term of 1926-27. In 1930 he was appointed to council after J. R. Chambers resigned as councilman-at-large to succeed the late Samuel Burgess as president of council. He also was street commissioner for about two years during the administration of Mayor Ralph Benedum.
Mr. Goodballet was a member of the Masons, the National Brotherhood of Operative Potters and the Pennsylvania Ave. Methodist Church.
He leaves his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Reese of East Liverpool; two sons, James Andrew Goodballet and Robert F. Goodballet of Columbus; two brothers, C. A. Goodballet and Harold Goodballet of East Liverpool, and four sisters, Mrs. James Rinard of Marietta, Mrs. Maggie Christman of Woodsfield, and Mrs. May Burns and Mrs. W. A. Schneider of East Liverpool.
The body was taken to the Dawson Funeral Home. Arrangements for the funeral are incomplete.
