James Augustin was the son of Willard and Catherine Betsey Holman Bristol. He was born December 12, 1871 in Savanah, Ill. and died as a result of a heart attack October 30, 1956 at the age of 84 years. He was one of a family of 11 children. The family moved to Shelby county from Carroll County, Illinois in 1879, when James was about age 8, and settled in the Redline area. He lived in that vicinity 42 years and married Nancy Agnes Gaer March 4, 1896. Their 3 children were Lela, Eva, and James Gaillard. Adolph Gaer of Harlan lived with the Bristols from the age of 6. Eva died of diptheria at age 6.

James was a member of the Church of Christ, and was an elder at the Redline and Harlan churches.

In 1921 the family left the farm and moved to 9th and Market Street in Harlan. For the first few years he worked for Shelby county and maintained roads. From 1933 to 1947 he was night watchman and city policeman for Harlan, and weed commissioner for Shelby county from 1948 to 1951.

He retired at the age of 81.
