OBITUARY: Sandersville Progress, Sandersville GA, 30 Dec 1914 (Wed)
Headline: An Old Citizen Passed Away on Last Friday
Sub-Headline: Mr. Elijah Warthen of Warthen, GA., Third of Three Brothers to Die
Last Friday Mr. Elijah Warthen passed away at his home at Warthen, Ga., where he had spent his entire life, at the age of 76 years. He was the third of three brothers who died within the year now coming to a close. The first was Mr. Macon Warthen, Sr., who died in the early part of the year, and was soon followed by his brother, Col. R. Lee Warthen who died two or three months later. All three of the brothers had passed three score and ten. Mr. Elijah Warthen is survived by his wife and four children, Messrs. Thomas, Macon and Richrd Warthen and one daughter, Mrs. Dr. E.T. May. He was a brother of Major Geo. D. Warthen of Sandersville and Mrs. H.A. Freeman of Fort Gaines, Ga., who are the two survivors of one of the most prominent and influential families in this section of Georgia. The Warthen home at Warthen where a large family of nine children were reared is still standing and is occupied by Mr. George Gilmore and family, Mrs. Gilmore being a niece of the three brothers who have died this year. Mr. Elijah Warthen, like his brothers, was a man of fine intelligence and was well informed on all events of importance in history. He was a man of quiet and modest disposition and preferred the quiet home life to one of activity. He possessed those qualities which made friends of all who knew him well and there were many expressions of regret when the news of his death became known. The funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and the burial took place in the family cemetery at Warthen where his parents, brothers and sisters had preceded him to the grave. He was the grand-father of Mr. Julian R. Evan of Sandersville and Mr. Warthen Evans of Dublin, his daughter, Mrs. B.D. Evans having died about twenty years ago. Those who knew Mr. Warthen best speak in the highest terms of him as a model citizen in many respects. He was a peace maker. Whenever trouble began to brew among neighbors his counsel was sought and with remarkable tact he would have them to agree to adjust their differences in a manner that was satisfactory to all concerned. His death is deplored by all who knew him, as he was a man who commanded the confidence, respect and esteem of all with whom he was acquainted.
