Bessie Warthen was the third child of Milton Elijah and Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Curry Warthen. Her father was a farmer and a miller. His mill was located on Stephens Creek and their farm surrounded Antioch Church near Mayview. She grew up with her 5 brothers and sisters.

She married BD Evans, Jr. who rode a horse out to Mayview (12 miles)to court her. They were married Nov 15, 1886 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Warthen, Rev. D.A.J. Battle officiating.
For their wedding gift, the father of the groom, Col B. D. Evans,Sr., gave the couple the lot next to his house on S. Smith Street. They began construction of their home, which was completed the next year. The house is at 214 Smith street and was remodeled after Bessie's death.
Bessie died at age 22, on January 29, 1893 from Tuberculosis. She had been ill for some time in spite of the "skill of eminent specialists in Atlanta as well as of resident physicians," . . . The funeral service was in the Sandersville Baptist Church, with Dr. Beck of Tennile preaching the sermon. An obituary was published in the Sandersville Herald,
Thursday, February 2, 1893, page 2, column 2.
