Coy Ray Maynard was born to William & Ida Mae Maynard in Sallisaw, Oklahoma on November 8, 1917. He had 5 brothers and sisters and 12 half-brothers and sisters. Coy had to quit school at a very young age to help support his family. He also married at an early age but lost his first wife and their baby at childbirth. Coy later met and married Venia Callahan on April 18, 1936 and they had eight children together. They were married for 67 years. Coy moved his family from Oklahoma to California in 1955. He worked long, hard days for S.A Camp Farms. He later went to work for Crawford & Sons in Wasco and retired from there in 1972. Coy was a hard worker and developed a great work ethic at a very early age. He enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and tending to his flowers. Coy is preceded in death by his wife Venia; two sons Lenard and Curtis Maynard; two daughters Dorothy Moore and Geri Brown; two grand-daughters Marcia Sellers and Sue Pressley; two great-grandsons Jason West and Todd Brown and great granddaughter, Rachel West. He is survived by his children Erma Ellis (Gordon) of Bakersfield, California, Evie Lawrence (Tony) of Memphis, Tennessee, Dewey Maynard (Norma) of Bakersfield, California and Roberta Wilkins (Kim) of Lake Tahoe, California. Coy had 21 grand-children, 50 great grand-children, 22 great-great-grandchildren and 3 great great-great-grandchildren, along with numerous nephews and nieces. Coy's last years were spent living at Glenwood Gardens Nursing Home in Bakersfield, California. There he enjoyed playing bingo and dominos and going on outings. In the nursing home, everyone knew him as "Mr. Coy." He was always helpful to residents and to the staff. The staff liked him very much and always had a nice smile and a kind hello for him. Coy will be missed by his family and nursing home friends and staff. Coy went to be with the Lord early in the morning on Thursday August 13, 2015. A viewing will be held on Monday August 17 from 5:00-7:00pm @ Peters Funeral Home, Shafter. A funeral service will also be held at Peters Funeral Home on Tuesday August 18 @ 10:00am. Interment will follow at Shafter Memorial Park.
