Sheriff Leonard Morehead was shot and killed while attending a magic show. He was seated in the back row when a man approached him and fired a shotgun, loaded with nails, screws and bolts, at his head. The suspect was found to be insane and committed to the Austin State Hospital. Sheriff Morehead had been elected on 5 Nov 1918 and re-elected on 2 Nov 1922. After his death, his wife completed his term, and became the second female sheriff in Texas history.
