She was married to John S. Swaney at Fostoria, Ohio on February 11, 1841. The Swaneys moved to Genoa Bluff, Iowa County, Iowa in 1854. Later they sold their farm (1865) and moved near Marengo, Iowa County, Iowa. They retired in Marengo. Both John and Rachel died January 4, 1892 in Marengo; their deaths were three hours apart. Both are buried in the Marengo cemetery. Records indicate that they were outstanding citizens of the area.
