Daniel Holden And Niece Drown In Oberhaus Creek

Daniel Holden, 33, of Napoleon and his 14-year old niece, Thelma Holden of Toledo, died as drowning victims in Oberhous [sic] Creek in East Napoleon Sunday afternoon.
The bodies were recovered by Fire Truck driver Chas. Bales and Henry Schlagel and despite heroic efforts of firemen, artificial respiration treatment failed to revive the victims.
Miss Holden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Holden of Toledo, died in an heroic effort to rescue her uncle.
She had gone with her grandmother, Mrs. Charles Holden, 66, and her uncle to bathe in the creek near the Wabash railroad viaduct, a short distance from State Rt. 110. The creek empties into the Maumee river.
After entering the water Mr. Holden waded into a hole and disappeared from sight. Miss Holden seized the drowning man but was carried under, being unable to free herself.
After the bodies had been recovered Chas. Bales and Carl Rausch of the fire department worked over the bodies, but were unsuccessful in their efforts to revive the victims. Lieut. John Mahnen of the Toledo rescue squad and M. B. Wiley, seaman first class, who were passing nearby on Rt. 110 were attracted to the scene and aided in efforts at artificial resuscitation.
Coroner Walter C. Hagen gave a verdict of accidental drowning. The bodies were removed to the Boyer Funeral home.
Double funeral services for the drowning victims were conducted by Rev. Lee in the Boyer Funeral home Tuesday at 2 p. m. Burial was made in the Wright cemetery in Liberty Center.
Daniel Holden was born in Adrian, Mich., and came with his parents to Napoleon in 1916. "Danny" as he was familiarly known had many friends in Napoleon. He leaves his parents Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Holden, a sister Dorothy Thompson, Defiance, and a brother, Sylvester, Toledo.
Miss Thelma Holden, 14, was born in Loura [sic], Ohio. She leaves her mother and her step-father Sylvester Holden, three brothers and two sisters.
