Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Bornin Watertown, New York, he was an attorney in practice at the start of the Civil War, when he enlisted Union Army being commissioned a Captain of Company A, in the 35th New York Volunteer Infantry. In 1862, he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel and participated in Pope's Virginia Campaign, plus the second Battle of Bull Run, before he left active duty due to illness. Returning duty in 1864, he was promoted Colonel in command of the 186th New York Infantry and led his corps in operations in Virginia, at the Battle of Weldon Railroad, Fort Mahone and at Petersburg, where he had to leave the field after being wounded. For gallant service to the Union, President Abraham Lincoln brevetted him Brigadier General of US Volunteers on April 9, 1865. After the war, he resumed his legal profession, served as Mayor of Watertown, New York and as a New York State Senator (1880-81). He died at age 83 in Watertown, New York.
