PIONEER OF LORAIN PASSES AWAY AFTER EVENTFUL CAREER OF USEFULLNESS TO COMMUNITY---EARLY SHIPBULIDER---NATIVE OF GERMANY

Conrad Kranz,(aka Conrad Krantz) pioneer Lorain resident, one of the city's wealthiest citizens and the last survivor of a circle of old school shipbuilders who a generation ago laid the foundation of the city's shipbuilding interents of today, died this morning at the home of one of his daughters, Mrs. Frank Oehlke, 638 Hamilton Ave. Death which was caused by a complication of causes induced by advanced age followed a period of several years of failing health during the last three weeks of which, Mr. Kranz had been confined to his bed critically ill. The end came at about 6 o'clock this
morning.

Diverse interest occupied the active period of Mr. Kranz's life. He was one of the founders of the Emmanuel Evangelical Church, Reid and Sixth St.. In civic life, he occupied offices of trust in village and township in the early days of Lorain's municipal history. By occupation of ship carpenter, he was associated with members of the Gawn and Wallace families, pioneer shipbuilders, in early shipbuilding activities here. It was through the agency of Mr. Kranz, that Lorain obtained its first cemetery. The owner of many acres of land in what is now the central residence district of the city. He gave to the community, a burial ground on what is now 6th street. The old cemetery, whose tombstones bear the names of pioneer settles in this territory is now reserved as a part of city park. Mr. Kranz was 86 years of age. He was born in
Rabais Hausen Hersfeld, Germany on January 7, 1829. In Germany he married and with his wife came to America in 1848 settling first in Schenectady, New York remaining there for about four years and coming to what is now Lorain in the spring of 1853. Mrs. Kranz died on May 27, 1901. Her death being followed 14 years and a day by that of her husband. She was buried on Decoration day. Seven children survive.
