Fendel Sutherlin met his family at The Dalles, Oregon Territory. Fendel led them over the Barstow Trail and they wintered in the Willamette Valley. In the early spring after the land dried out, the family continued to an area known as "Camas Swale" in Douglas County. This area became Sutherlin, Oregon.
In a letter to his brother Owen Sutherlin living in Greencastle, Indiana on April 9, 1858, John Sutherlin had this to say about his daughter Serrena and her family: "Matthew Adams and Reany have one handsome and smart little boy, his name is William Sampson*. They are doing very well, increasing in wealth very fast. He is very industrious [talking about Matthew], has a good many stock of all kinds. Last summer sold upwards of $500 worth of hogs, has bought land til his claim is nearly a section."
Serrena's father passed away 3 April 1885 at his home near Oakland, Oregon; in his Will, he bequeathed her $300.
*William Sampson Adams married William A. Willis' daughter Sarah on 11 April 1880 in Douglas Co., Oregon; they had a double wedding with William's sister, Mary Elizabeth Adams and Sarah's brother, Willard Paul Willis.
