FUNERAL OF
MRS. RANKIN
HELD JULY 6
--------------
Service Held At Local
Church
-------------
ACTIVE IN CLUBS
---------------
Home and Business
In This District
Since 1905
-----------

Mrs. J. L. Rankin, wife of the pio-
neer business man of this district and worker in the various women's club organizations of the east bay, passed away Monday evening at her home, 5722 Keith avenue, following a stroke which she suffered the preceding Saturday.

The funeral was held Wednesday at 10 o'clock, at the Albert Brown chapel on Piedmont avenue, Rev. Leland M. Miller of the United Presbyterian church, conducting the last rites in the presence of a large concourse of friends. Floral tributes from neighbors and organizations with which she was affiliated during her life, bespoke the esteem in which she was universally held.

A native of Illinois, Mrs. Rankin came west with her husband in 1901. Their home was first established in Berkeley, but when Mr. Rankin opened his real estate office in 1905 on College avenue, the couple bought a home at the Keith avenue address, where they have since resided.

Though of retiring nature that shrank from public office in club work, Mrs. Rankin was, nevertheless, an alert and indefatigable worker in the various organizations with which she was affiliated, including the Rockridge Woman's Club, which she joined in 1924, the Berkeley City Club, the Twentieth Century Club and the Oakland City Club, in which she was one of the charter members. Always her mind was alert to the events of the day as they touched the basic fundamentals of our own government and her a broad understanding of political science and its influence abroad and at home.

The sympathy of the district is ex-tended to members of her immediate family who survive, including the husband, Mr. J.L. Rankin; one daughter, Mrs. G.S. Dunscomb of Santa Cruz; a son Ivan S. Rankin, 809 Alma avenue, this city.
