Funeral Services Held October 22 For Mrs. John Eells

Mrs. Emma Ethel Eells, 69, a resident of Mantrap township for 35 years, died October 18 at St. Joseph's hospital. She had been in ill health for several years, and death was due to a heart ailment.

Funeral services were held October 22 from the Nevis Church of Christ. Rev. Calvin Miller officiated at the final rites, and interment was made in the Nevis cemetery. Mrs. Phil Annette and Mrs. Earl Erickson, accompanied by Mrs. Lloyd Dawson on the piano, sang "Rock of Ages", "Sweet By and By", and "Beyond the Sunset".

Pallbearers were Russell Severtson, Paul Mastellar, Chris Jensen, John Bail, Gus Kellner, and Henry Hanson.

Emma Ethel Mathes, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Mathes, was born March 6, 1883 in Mattoon, Illinois. She attended school in Illinois, and on November 5, 1902 was married to John Henry Eells in Auburn, Nebraska. They moved here from Ada in the spring of 1917 and settled on their farm in Mantrap township, where she took an active interest in the community. A member of the Methodist church, she was well known for her generous hospitality and desire to be a good neighbor. Mrs. Eells celebrated her golden anniversary on July 20th with open house and a lawn party for more than 200 guests.

She is survived by her husband, John; one son, Millard; two daughters, Mrs. Dan Hearty (Katie) of the Dorset community, and Mrs. Robert Sims (Desma) of Houston; two brothers, Grover Mathes of Minneapolis and Arthur Mathes of Des Moines; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Out-of-town friends and relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Thoreen and Mr. Herbert Hanson of Minneapolis, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Sims of Houston.
