Civil War Veteran Dies
Conrad Meredith, 92, Last Survivor of 93rd Infantry
Meredith died at 11:45 am of heart disease at National Military Home hospital, where he was taken Wednesday night from his home. He was one of the most active of veterans until Armistice day when he participated in services held by the American Legion.
Meredith, who devoted many of his last days to caring for the flower garden at his home, had been in ailing health since the exercises.
A life-long resident of Dayton, he was born May 28, 1845, and enlisted as a private in Company B of the Ninety Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry regiment in 1863. Sent to Tennessee, he was in considerable fighting in that sector until the end of the war, participating in the battle of Nashville and the memorable march with Sherman from Atlanta to the sea. Following the march he was detached from his regiment as an orderly in charge of supplies and spent the remainder of the war there until his dismissal November 22, 1865.
He ws a member of the G A R and the Central Church of Christ. With his death only four members remain in Old Guard post.
Services will be conducted Saturday at 10 am at the Boyer Funeral home with buriel in Woodland Cemetery.
Surviving are two children, Mrs Gertrude McClure, employed at the military home, and Perry E Meredith; a sister Mrs William Stolz; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
