Laverne Nixon, 88, a resident of Freeport since 1940, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2001

She was born in Grimes County in 1912, the oldest child of James "Buster" and Lillian Morris.

She married Clarence E. Nixon, Sr., in 1929, and moved to Freeport in 1940, where her husband was a pipefitter with the Dow Chemical Company.
They raised their family here and she was an active volunteer in her church, the schools and sports events in the area.

Mr. Nixon preceded her in death in 1957, and her daughter, Charlene, preceded her in death in 1999.

For many years she was an avid bowler. In the 1990's she served as a director in The Freeport League. In 1997 she was honored by The Brazosport Facts as an "Unsung Hero" in Brazoria County for her dedicated volunteerism through the years.

She is survived by her five children and their families:
Clarence "Cotton" Nixon, Jr. and wife, Beverly, of Freeport; their daughter, Carol Ann Nixon Adam and husband, George, Jr., of Freeport; their children, Allison and George, III. Pearlene Nixon Morris Webb and husband, Charles, of Brazoria; her three sons and their families: Stanley Morris and wife, Julie, of Lake Jackson; children, Jason and wife, Angela, and Lisa Morris Bradford and husband, Jason and daughter, Madison; Trenton and Lauren; Larry Morris and wife, Gale, of Richwood; children: Jeremy, Heather and Joshua; Gregory Morris and wife, JoLynn, of Ladonia, Tx; children: Brandi, Gregory, II, Kelli and Ami. James Nixon, of Colorado; children: Stephanie Nixon Bonanza and James Nixon, II, and wife, Laura, all of New York. Nancy Nixon, of Houston; her son, Brent Lee Nixon and wife, Deanna, of Houston; children: Faithe and Colby. Linda Nixon Shaw Glasglow; her children: Erica Lynn Shaw Peterson, and husband, Lance, and Allen Wayne Shaw and wife, Jennifer; children: Kamrin and Abby.

Preceding her in death were five of her siblings: Brady Morris, Curtis Morris, Jimmie Morris Jordan, William Edward Morris and John David Morris.

She is survived by: Melva Morris Green and husband, Ora, of Waco, Tx; Mary Edna Morris Upchurch, of Onalaska, Tx; Irene Morris Baylor, of Waco, Tx; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Leona Morris, of Freeport; sister-in-law, Katherine Morris, of Lake Jackson; sister-in-law, Ann Morris, of Lake Jackson; Winona Morris Junco and husband, Manuel, of Pearland; Lester Ray Morris and wife, Maner, of Pearland; Barbara Ann Morris Dinning of Alvin; Virginia Nell Morris Young and husband, Dennis of Victoria; and Melba Joyce Morris Norton of Van Vleck.

Following her husband's death, Mrs. Nixon worked for her neighbors, Billy and Frances Mills, in rearing their children and enjoying many years of softball games with that family. She is "Nanny" for Barbara Mills Monte and husband, Larry, of Lake Jackson; Sandy Mills Dodson and husband, Bob, of Madisonville; The Honorable Judge Jerri Mills and husband, Brian, of Brazoria; Karen Mills of Freeport; and Scott Mills and wife, Cindy, of Houston.

In 1983, Mrs. Nixon married James Wingo and they continued to make Freeport their home. He preceded her in death in 1988. Surviving are his son, Ronnie Wingo and wife, Jane, of Brazoria, and their children.

For the past four years, Mrs. Nixon has resided at The Carriage Inn Retirement Center in Lake Jackson. The family appreciates the love and care of the staff and residents at The Inn. Her faithful caregivers have been Earnestine Randon, Dora Green and Bessie Higgins.
