Gaston was educated at the University of North Carolina (UNC) with a law degree, and following graduation continued to farm a portion of his father's large plantation and became widely known as an eminent attorney.

In 1850, the 36-year old bachelor married a distant cousin, Sarah Elizabeth Hinton of Johnston County, the 19-year old daughter of James Isaac Hinton & Frances Jane Hart.

Gaston & Sarah would become parents to 8 known surviving children, two of whom became doctors:

* Fannie Hart Wildr (1855-1912)
* Samuel Wilder (1857-1931)

In addition to his farm and legal practice, Gaston H. Wilder served about 8 years in the NC Legislature, was President of the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad; and served on the committee to plan the new State capitol building. He was a member of the NC Militia, and when America went to war against Mexico in 1845, he served as a Major with the NC Regiment, and was Paymaster of the unit. After having spent some years in the service of his country in the Mexican war, was ranked as Major in the U. S. Army, but was in the Paymaster's department of General Zachary Taylor's line. After the war he was stationed for a time in New York
and Washington DC.

Maj. Wilder died in 1873 at age 59. His wife of 23 years never remarried and survived him 28 years, passing in 1901 at age 69. After her husbands death, she went to live with her sons in Birmingham, AL.

Sons, Samuel, William and James all removed to Birmingham, AL. Samuel Wilder never married and was an attorney. William Hinton Wilder was a noted physician in Birmingham. She was a descendant of Abraham de Lyon of Portugal, one of the first Jewish settlers in Savannah, GA, a winegrower, who fled Portugal to escape the Spanish Inquisition and set up one of the first vineyards in Georgia with a grant from Oglethorpe ca. 1740. Gaston and Leonora lived in Galveston, TX where they raised two children.
